Who We Are
Green Pencils Ltd manufactures high quality environment-friendly branded pencils and pens from recycled paper. This keeps the environment clean and reduces the need to cut down trees to make pencils and plastics to make pens. We are geared towards addressing the global challenge of Climate Change in line with the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and Kenya's Vision 2030. Globally, more than 14 billion pencils are used. A tree has to be cut down for one to use a wooden pencil. To meet the annual demand, thousands of trees have to be cut down each year. As our population increases, more pencils will be used, increasing the number of trees that have to be felled.
Did you ever imagine
That something as ordinary, and small as a pencil, can have such a big negative impact on our environment? Plastics are like diamonds; they last forever. They are durable, therefore they can provide services for many decades. However, plastic pens are often quickly discarded after their short use-life span. The pens then end up at the garbage dump where they will exist for centuries.
Facts on Trees, Our Environment & Pencils
While small in size, the wooden pencil is rather harmful to the environment. Natural resources are being depleted because of the manufacturing of this useful writing tool. Thousands of trees have to be felled to provide for the worldwide demand. Some of the trees being chopped down are from the endangered rain forests. This poses a great threat to the environment. The quality of our environment - the water, air and soil - depends on the roles trees play. Through transpiration, trees help create rain as they expel moisture into the atmosphere; their roots draw it from the soil and their leaves return it to the air. Trees clean the air we breathe by taking in carbon dioxide through the leaves and then giving off the oxygen we need to breathe. Roots help hold the soil in place to prevent erosion which not only saves the soil, but also keeps our waterways cleaner. Have you observed that water is usually cleaner when there is an abundance of trees? The trees also provide shade to both human and wild animals thereby making life conducive and enjoyable for them. In some countries, including Kenya, trees are used as fuel for cooking in some households. Trees also provide wood for making furniture. Medicines and oils for cosmetics are made from the bark, leaves and roots of trees. Parks and campgrounds would certainly not be the same without trees.
